5 Long Lasting Fruits and Veggies to Add to Your Shopping List

Even if you know it's better to buy fruits and vegetables, it can be tempting to opt for processed foods like boxed meals and meal kits, because they last so much longer. It's painful throwing away food that has gone bad before you could use it! Food in the trash = Money in the trash.

If it feels like every time you buy fresh produce, you end up throwing lots of it away, it's time to talk about long-lasting fruits and veggies.

In general, more "fragile" fruits and vegetables like lettuce greens or berries will go bad more quickly than hearty ones.  Below are some fruits and vegetables that will LAST!

1. Cabbage

Picture
Wrapped in plastic in the fridge, cabbage can last up to 2 months.
Tip: Use cabbage in place of lettuce in meals like sandwiches, burgers, and tacos.

2. Apples

When apples are kept in a plastic bag in the fridge, they can last 3-4 weeks.
Tip: Keep apples away from other produce, as they can make them ripen (and go bad) more quickly.

Did you know?

Larger apples go bad the fastest... so eat them first!

3. Root Vegetables
(beets, potatoes, carrots, garlic, parsnips, turnips, rutabaga)

Carrots will last for a few weeks if you keep them dry. Wrap them with a paper towel to help.
Onions will last up to a month in a dry, dark cabinet. In the refrigerator, they can last a year!
