7 Healthy Holiday Swaps

12/21/2016

It's the most wonderful time of the year....
It's also the time for cookies, cakes, sweet breads, stuffings, casseroles... Helloooo extra pounds! It is totally fine to enjoy unhealthy foods sometimes (#TreatYourself), but this list of swaps can make your holiday table a bit healthier.

1. Lighter Dips & Salsas in Place of Full Fat Dips

Using nonfat yogurt in creamy dips bumps up the protein and cuts down on fat and calories. Salsas are also great, because they're usually full of healthy veggies, like our Farmers Market Salsa.

2. Whole Wheat Rolls Instead of White Bread

Whole wheat rolls are not only higher in fiber; They also have more texture and flavor!
Try something like this

3. Broth-Based Soups or Stews Instead of Creamy Soups

This Butternut Harvest Chili is super hearty without all of the extra fat and calories of cream-based soups.

4. Fruit Crisp or Cobbler Instead of Pie

Pie crust and fillings tend to pack a lot more fat and calories into a small slice. Choose cobblers or crisps to lighten your dessert.

5. Healthier Veggies Over Casseroles

Some holiday veggies can hardly be called veggies anymore after adding all the fat, salt, and/or sugar. I'm looking at you, green bean casserole.

For a healthier version of creamed spinach use low fat milk instead of heavy cream to reduce calories and fat.

Roasted vegetables are always a good option. Simple roasted carrots, spiced potatoes, or roasted root vegetables are a couple tasty choices.

6. Spiced Apple Cider in Place of Eggnog

There are 3 ways to thaw your turkey safely, and letting it sit on the counter isn't on the list.

There are 3 ways to thaw your turkey safely — in the refrigerator, in cold water, or in the microwave.

1. Refrigerator

Keep the turkey in its original wrapper. Place it on a tray or in a pan to catch any juices that may leak. A thawed turkey can remain in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days. If necessary, a turkey that has been properly thawed in the refrigerator may be refrozen.

INCORRECT WAY: Juices can leak on milk and other parts of the refrigerator

2. Cold Water

Wrap your turkey securely, making sure the water is not able to leak through the wrapping. Submerge your wrapped turkey in cold tap water. Change the water every 30 minutes. Cook the turkey immediately after it is thawed. Do not refreeze.

3. Microwave

Check the owner's manual of your microwave (or look up your specific microwave online).  It should tell you what size turkey will fit, how many minutes per pound it will need to thaw, and what power level to use. Remove all outside wrapping, and place on a microwave-safe dish to catch any juices that may leak. Cook your turkey immediately. Do not refreeze or refrigerate your turkey after thawing in the microwave.

REMINDER: Remove giblets from the turkey cavities after thawing. Cook separately.

Tricks, Treats, & Healthier Halloween Eats!

10/27/2016

Chances are, your kids will riot if you try to trade out their Halloween candy for fruit and veggies. To keep the peace, it may not be a good idea to throw all  the Halloween candy... But we can give them a few healthier options leading up to the big day. Here are some cute ideas to make this month fun!
Picture

Mini Jack-O-Lantern

Oranges and clementines make the perfect mini jack-o-lanterns! A black permanent marker can get you there. Let the kids choose what kind of faces to draw, then they can chow down on their creations.

Spooky Popcorn Hands

Put the kids to work, stuffing plastic gloves with popcorn (and almonds for fingernails). They'll have just as much fun playing with this snack as they will eating it!

Apple Nachos

Are your kids (um... or you) dying to sink their teeth into a caramel apple? Apart from being way less messy, these Apple Nachos are also a healthier option. You just might be able to talk the kiddos into eating these as a post-trick-or-treating snack (and delaying the candy coma).

M O N S T E R  M O U T H S!

Fun. Tasty. Sort of creepy. Pretty much exactly what kids are looking for in a snack. Monster mouths are made by slathering peanut butter between 2 apple slices, then adding peanuts or pumpkin seeds for teeth. Try sunflower seed butter and raisins for kids with nut allergies.
